하늘은 지금 이 순간 광화문 위에 선 하늘입니다. 별의 적경과 적위를 지금의 시각으로 돌려 놓은 것이고, 지평선이 바깥 원, 천정이 그 가운데입니다. 몇 개가 보이는지는 해가 정합니다. 해는 지평선 아래 어딘가에 있고 얼마나 내려갔느냐가 빈 하늘과 가득 찬 하늘을 가릅니다. 그래서 낮에는 거의 비어 있다가, 저녁이 깊어지면 아무도 건드리지 않아도 차오릅니다.
규칙
태어난 해를 넣으면, 당신보다 먼저 떠난 빛이 꺼집니다.
남는 것은 당신이 이미 여기 있을 때 길을 나선 빛뿐입니다. 생각보다 빨리 빕니다. 이름난 별은 대개 수백 광년 밖이라 가장 먼저 사라지고, 남는 것은 가깝고 어둡고 이름 없는 것들입니다. 아무도 가리키지 않는 별들.
계산한 것과 어림한 것
위치와 거리와 해의 자리는 계산이고, 실제 하늘과 맞춰 확인했습니다. 서울의 일몰 시각이 분 단위로 맞고, 북극성은 위도만큼 올라와 있습니다. 천구 북극에서 0.74도 비켜 있는 만큼 그 언저리를 오갑니다.
어느 박명에 몇 등급까지 눈에 들어오는지는 측정이 아닙니다. 박명을 가르는 네 기준 사이를 이어 만든 모델이고, 날씨나 도시의 불빛은 여기에 들어 있지 않습니다.

The sky is the one standing over Gwanghwamun at this moment: right ascension and declination turned through the hour angle of now, the horizon a circle, the zenith the middle of it. How many stars are out is decided by the sun — it is still down there somewhere, and how far down is what makes the difference between an empty sky and a full one. So the piece is nearly bare in the afternoon and fills in as the evening goes, without anyone touching it.
The rule
Put in the year you were born, and the light that set out before you did goes out.
What is left is only the light that began its journey while you were already here. It empties faster than you would think. Most of the famous ones are hundreds of light years off, so they are the first to go; what remains is the near, dim, unnamed company — the stars nobody points at.
What is calculated and what is guessed
The positions, the distances and the sun are calculated, and they are checked against the real sky: sunset in Seoul comes out to the minute, and Polaris sits at the latitude, give or take the three quarters of a degree it is actually off the pole.
How many stars the eye could pick out at a given moment of twilight is not a measurement. It is a model, drawn between the four thresholds that define dusk, and it says nothing about the weather or the light coming off the city.
